What can be done against Snoring?
You can stop snoring
Snoring – we all know it, and some of us are even true “masters” of it. But what is actually behind this nightly concert of noise? Let’s delve into the world of snoring and find out why we snore and how we can get it under control.
What is snoring?
Snoring, also known as "rhonchopathy" (sounds fancy, right?), is a rattling noise that occurs when the upper airway partially narrows during sleep. The air we breathe in causes the soft tissues in the throat, palate and uvula to vibrate - and there we go, snoring is born.
The most common causes of snoring:
Anatomy: Some people are just unlucky – a deviated nasal septum, enlarged tonsils or a slightly overly large uvula can block the airflow.
Excessive weight: Fatty tissue in the throat causes the airways to become narrower. The more weight you have, the more likely you are to snore.
Alcohol and tranquilizers: A glass of wine in the evening relaxes you – but unfortunately it also relaxes the muscles in your throat. Therefore, we are more likely to snore.
Sleeping position: If you sleep on your back, you are basically inviting your tongue to rest in your throat. It is better to sleep on your side!
Age: As we get older, our muscles weaken, including those in our throat. It's no wonder that we snore more often as we get older.
When must snoring be taken seriously
Snoring is not always harmless. In some cases, it is caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS). This causes breathing to stop, and that is definitely not healthy. Symptoms include loud snoring with pauses, tiredness during the day and morning headaches. If this applies to you: Make an appointment with your primary care physician.
